EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
