Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The story starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
